5 Reasons Tanzanite Is the Ring to Wear This Season
It's found at the foot of one mountain. It shifts colour as you move. And it's December's birthstone.
Some gemstones are mined all over the world. Tanzanite comes from one small patch of hills in northern Tanzania, and it's rarer than the diamond. Here's why so many people fall for it, and why now is the moment to choose yours.
It comes from one place on Earth
Every tanzanite you'll ever see was mined in the Merelani Hills, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. The mining area covers just a few square kilometres. When you wear tanzanite, you're wearing a stone with one address.
- Mined only in Tanzania
- Merelani Hills origin
- Near Mount Kilimanjaro
- Discovered in 1967
- Single-source gemstone
- December birthstone
It changes colour as you move
Tanzanite shows different colours from different angles: deep blue one way, rich violet another, with flashes of warm purple in between. Under candlelight it leans violet; in daylight it turns bluer. One ring, several moods.
Tanzanite is trichroic: a single crystal can show three colours (blue, violet and a hint of burgundy) depending on the angle you look from.
It's December's birthstone
Tanzanite is one of the official birthstones for December. That makes it a natural choice for Christmas, a December birthday or a winter anniversary, and a gift with meaning built in.

It's a gemstone with a story
Tanzanite was only discovered in 1967 and is named after the country it comes from. In gemstone terms it's brand new, which is part of its appeal: you're wearing something the world has only just found.
Tanzanite was discovered in 1967, two years before the first Moon landing. In gemstone terms, it's practically brand new.
